How to choose the right bearing puller
What is the bearing puller?
A bearing puller is a tool used to remove components such as bearings, gears and pulleys from shafts or grooves. The puller grips the component securely with specially designed jaws and pulls it off the shaft.
Pullers are used in various industries to remove bearings safely and efficiently. Whether you work in the automotive industry or the food and beverage industry, bearing pulleys can help you easily remove bearings and other components.
What types of bearing pullers are there?
Each bearing puller is divided into two categories: external bearing pullers and internal bearing pullers.
When the bearing is installed on the shaft, use an external bearing puller. They have jaws that grip the outside diameter of the bearing, and a force-applying screw that pushes on the end of the shaft. When the set screw is tightened, the jaws push the bearing along the shaft.
This type of puller can be mechanically or hydraulically assisted. Hydraulic bearing pullers require minimal manual operation, making them ideal for heavy-duty applications. However, professional heavy-duty bearing pullers are also available for these applications.
Internal or Blind Hole Bearing Pullers are used to install bearings or components into grooves that have openings in the inner diameter. Insert the puller into the inside diameter of the bearing and clamp the bearing. This can be achieved by extending or using claws. The bearing can then be pulled out of the groove.
Reversible bearing pullers are also available. Due to its reversible arm, this type of puller is suitable for both internal and external pulling. This makes them ideal for applications where bearings are mounted on shafts and in grooves.
How to decide which type of puller to use?
Deciding which puller to use depends on many factors. You first need to determine if you need an external bearing puller or an internal bearing puller.
If the part to be removed is mounted on the shaft and can be removed freely from the outside diameter, an external bearing puller is required. This is the most common type of puller. However, if the part you are removing is in a groove that has access to the inside diameter, you will need an internal bearing puller.
Reversible bearing pullers are used to remove deep groove ball bearings from shaft ends. If you require an external bearing puller, you can choose between mechanical and hydraulic bearing pullers. If you are on a tight budget, a mechanical bearing puller may be suitable. However, if you work with heavy machinery, you might consider using a hydraulically assisted bearing puller to reduce the manual work required.
You also need to consider space conditions. This includes the diameter and depth of the bearing, as well as the available space around the bearing. Some bearing pullers require more operating space than others.
When choosing which bearing puller to use, all influencing factors should always be carefully considered. If you're not sure which bearing puller to choose, it's best to consult an expert before making a decision.
